Dhaka: The investigation into the shooting of a student hanging from the cornice of a building at Rampura in the capital on July 19, 2024, during the July mass uprising is almost in its final stage. “The investigation into the indiscriminate shooting at a student Amir Hossain, who was hanging from the cornice in Rampura and two others during the July mass uprising, is almost in its final stage,” International Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told BSS today.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal’s investigation agency informed them that the investigation report of the incident will be available to the prosecution very soon. Assistant Sub-Inspector Chanchal Chandra Sarkar was arrested from Dighinala Police Station in Khagrachari District on charges of shooting Amir Hossain on January 26 last in this connection. He was later produced before the tribunal on January 28 last.

On July 19, 2024, Amir Hossain was returning home after offering Jummah prayer when he was chased by a mob near his home, prompting police to start firing gunshots at him. Amir ran to the fourth floor of an under-construction building and took shelter. As the police chased the protesters and climbed to the fourth floor of the building, they repeatedly asked him to jump down at gunpoint.

A policeman fired several shots to scare him, causing Amir Hossain to jump and hang on the rod of the under-construction building. Subsequently, a policeman from the third floor fired six shots at Amir, hitting his legs. After the police left, Amir jumped and landed on the third floor while bleeding from his legs.

After about three hours, a student and two doctors rescued Amir and took him to a local hospital, from where he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Amir Hossain fortunately survived this brutal incident.
