Mongla: With the theme "Let's do planned afforestation, build a green Bangladesh," the Mongla Port Authority (MPA) today began the tree plantation programme -2025. As part of the initiative, the MPA Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman inaugurated the programme by planting a 'Krishna Chura' (Delonix Regia) sapling on the NPA headquarters premises, said Md Makruzzaman, deputy secretary and Public Relations Officer of MPA.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, MPA member (Finance) and Director (Administration) also participated by planting a flower sapling each. The event was attended by various key figures including the Director (Board), Harbour Master, Chief Finance and Accounts Officer, Chief Engineer (Mechanical and Electrical), Chief Hydrographer, Director (Traffic), Chief Security Officer, Chief Audit Officer, Chief Medical Officer, along with other officers and employees of the port.
The chief guest highlighted the vulnerability of Mongla port to natural disasters like cyclones and storm surges due to its coastal location. He emphasized that trees serve as natural defenses, providing protection against adverse weather conditions. By planting around 2000 saplings of fruit, forest, and medicinal trees at various points including the headquarters, Mongla Port aims to lead efforts in building a green Bangladesh and protecting the natural environment.
He further urged all officials and employees to take responsibility for the care of both the newly planted trees and those from previous years. The event concluded with a special prayer for the overall development of the country, nation, and port.
