Dhaka: The government has established a five-member committee led by Justice Shamim Hasnain, a former judge of the High Court Division, to investigate allegations regarding the last three Jatiya Sangsad elections. The committee is tasked with making recommendations to ensure fair future elections.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Cabinet Division has issued a notification that the committee's formation is effective immediately. The committee is required to submit its findings by September 30, 2025. The interim government aims to examine corruption, irregularities, and crimes associated with the past elections to protect democratic principles and prevent authoritarian regimes.
The notification highlights that the elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024 have been criticized domestically and internationally. Allegations suggest that the Awami League was elected through a staged process, undermining the voting rights of citizens. There are also serious accusations against those who conducted these elections, allegedly violating constitutional obligations.
The committee includes Shamim Al Mamun, Kazi Mahfuzul Haque (Supon), Barrister Tazrian Akram Hossain, and Dr. Md Abdul Alim. Their tasks involve analyzing reports from election observers, media allegations, and expert opinions on the elections' integrity and non-partisan nature.
The committee will examine the roles of the election commission, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies, and suggest necessary changes to laws and regulations for fair elections. It will also scrutinize the actions of the ruling party and others concerning voter rights and political party participation, as well as financial irregularities involving the election commissions.
The Cabinet Division will provide secretarial support, while the Election Commission will offer logistical and informational assistance. The committee has the authority to recall documents, interrogate individuals, and co-opt members as needed for its investigation.
