Bangladesh Seeks Norway’s Support for IMO Council Membership

Dhaka: Bangladesh has sought the support of Norway for Category ‘C’ membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026-27 term. Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain made this request during a meeting with Norwegian Ambassador to Bangladesh Hakon Arald Gulbrandsen at the Ministry of Shipping today.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser highlighted the maritime significance of Bangladesh, noting its status as a leading maritime nation with four seaports, including a deep-sea port currently under construction at Matarbari. He emphasized Bangladesh’s strategic location within the Indo-Pacific plan, its growing shipbuilding exports, and contributions to global maritime policies. Moreover, he reinforced Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable maritime development and carbon-neutral shipping goals.



The adviser also extended an invitation to Norwegian investment in Bangladesh’s expanding shipbuilding industry, highlighting the country’s leadership in ship recycling and its employment of 21,000 trained seafarers, which contributes to enhanced maritime security and gender inclusion.



Ambassador Gulbrandsen commended Bangladesh for its environmental safeguards in ship breaking and its efforts in addressing climate change. He acknowledged the long-standing maritime partnership between Norway and Bangladesh, noting the interest of various Norwegian shipping companies in investing in the country. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of workers in Bangladesh’s ship-breaking industry.
