Dhaka: The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing has issued a warning to social media users to exercise caution and avoid falling for AI-generated deepfake videos featuring Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. These videos are reportedly being produced by gamblers to mislead the public.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the press wing confirmed that gambling advertisements targeting Bangladeshi users on social media have taken a concerning turn. The popularity of Professor Muhammad Yunus is being exploited by creating deepfake videos that imitate news reports and fake statements to lure users to gambling sites. The press wing’s statement was shared today on their official Facebook page, CA Press Wing Facts.

One recent deepfake video falsely depicts Professor Yunus endorsing a gambling app. The manipulated footage shows him inviting people to gamble for financial gain, which is entirely fabricated. Facebook user Jwfrh Hibbert shared the video, misleading viewers into believing that the government had launched an app offering significant returns on investments. The video falsely quotes Prof Yunus claiming that testers of the product earned over 555,000 BDT in a week, with the assurance of a personal refund if results were not achieved.

Investigations revealed the video to be AI-manipulated, with a reverse image search showing that the footage was taken from Al Jazeera’s “Talk to Al Jazeera” program, aired on April 27, 2025. In the real interview, Prof Yunus did not mention gambling or investment apps. The fake video also misused the bdnews24.com logo without their involvement.

Further examination of the Facebook account that posted the video found it was created in June 2022 and operated by multiple users from Lithuania. The account’s few posts all promoted a gambling app named Blue Live. The press wing confirmed that the video was entirely fake, with a robotic voice that did not match Dr. Yunus’ voice.

This incident is not isolated, as numerous deepfake videos featuring Prof Yunus have surfaced since the interim government’s formation in August 2024. These videos falsely portray him promoting gaming apps as solutions to issues like poverty and unemployment, or as support for various causes. Another deepfake video shows Dr. Yunus promoting a betting site named Crazy Time Bangladesh, which is also fabricated.

A reverse image search of key frames connected the fake content to an original video by News24, showcasing the deceptive editing. The press wing urges social media users to remain vigilant and avoid being deceived by such deepfakes.
