Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today announced that the national polls schedule will be declared two months prior to the elections. He stated, "The polls schedule will be announced 55 or 60 days before the election. It is not possible to announce the exact date of the election at this time. However, the commission is ready whenever the election is held," during a briefing with reporters at his office at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nasir Uddin emphasized the importance of having an updated voter list ready before the election schedule is announced. He mentioned that the process of updating the voter list will be completed by June. The CEC also highlighted potential changes in the voter registration law to accommodate younger voters, specifically those who have turned 18.
Additionally, the CEC noted that the application period for political party registration will conclude on June 22. He remarked on the significant task of determining the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies. In addressing a query, Nasir Uddin explained the necessity of discussions with the government to understand their position on these issues, which will inform decisions regarding the timing of the vote.
The CEC further elaborated that the commission is prepared to conduct elections based on insights from the government. He identified voter registration as the most challenging task, stating that this task is nearing completion. Nasir Uddin also mentioned a recent important meeting in London and the joint statement that followed, underscoring that the government's cooperation is crucial for holding a fair election. Despite the independence of the Election Commission, he reiterated that elections are not feasible without government support.
The Chief Adviser has expressed a desire to conduct a fair election, the CEC added.
