Khulna: Over 8 lakh animals were sacrificed during Eid-ul-Azha in all 10 districts of Khulna division this year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Livestock Services (DoLS) in Khulna Division reported that among the sacrificed animals, 2,73,057 were cows and buffaloes, 5,31,148 were goats and sheep, and 19 were other animals.
In district-wise figures, Khulna district recorded the highest number of sacrificial animals with 1,28,711, while Narail reported the lowest with 28,314. Other districts included Bagerhat with 61,316, Satkhira with 82,675, Jashore with 94,747, Jhenidah with 93,726, Magura with 53,617, Kushtia with 96,946, Chuadanga with 84,835, and Meherpur with 79,337.
A total of 1,64,494 sacrificial animals were sold through online platforms. Dr. Nurullah Md. Ahsan, Director of DoLS in Khulna division, informed that DoLS workers provided 1,797 services during Eid-ul-Azha, including health examinations of 441 sacrificial animals at cattle markets.
The department stated that 2,42,465 sacrificial animals remained unsold this year. This situation was attributed to the high production of sacrificial animals, and it is not uncommon for some animals to remain unsold. These animals will be required for various rituals and ceremonies in the coming days.
The DoLS also reported that over 14.35 lakh sacrificial animals were reared in the Khulna division, against a demand of 10.47 lakh for Eid-ul-Azha.
