Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad announced today that the Election Commission (EC) has positively responded to the party’s request for the reinstatement of its registration and electoral symbol, the Scale (Daripalla).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azad conveyed that the EC has committed to taking only the necessary time to execute the official procedures to implement the court’s directive. He addressed the media following a meeting between a Jamaat delegation, led by him, and Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin along with other commissioners at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Azad emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “We placed our statement to the EC and requested not to delay the procedures, as this issue is tied to the emotions of millions of people.” He further expressed trust in the EC, saying, “The court has returned our rights, and we want to keep our trust in the EC.”

Addressing queries regarding the party’s symbol, Azad explained, “The court has directed to take the registration issue back to its previous state. I contested the 2008 election with Jamaat’s symbol, Daripalla (Scale) and elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). The Appellate Division has repealed the unjust verdict. As it is a court order, there is no scope to deny it.”

The Jamaat delegation also included Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair; Media and Publicity Secretary Matiur Rahman Akand; Central Executive Committee member Mobarak Hossain; Central Working Committee member Jasim Uddin Sarker; and senior lawyer Shishir Manir.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court recently overturned the High Court’s decision that had declared Jamaat’s registration illegal and directed the Election Commission to address the party’s electoral symbol issue.
