Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia today expressed her hope that democracy will soon be restored in Bangladesh. ‘Ziaur Rahman sacrificed his life for establishing democracy and safeguarding independence and sovereignty. But this democracy still gets hampered at every step. Very soon we will see democracy is restored in Bangladesh,’ she stated during a virtual address.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BNP chief was speaking at a discussion organized to commemorate the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at the capital’s Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB). She called upon party members to honor Shaheed Zia by engaging in politics that addresses issues through democratic means.

Khaleda reflected on how the martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman brings painful memories to her family each year, impacting not only them but leaving the entire country in grief and without guidance. She emphasized Ziaur Rahman’s significant role in the country’s history, highlighting his proclamation of independence from Chattogram and his legacy as a successful, honest, and patriotic leader.

She further elaborated on Ziaur Rahman’s contributions as an advocate for democracy, independence, sovereignty, freedom of the press, and the independence of the judiciary. Khaleda Zia concluded by praying for the eternal peace of Ziaur Rahman’s departed soul.
