Dhaka: The Orthopaedic Surgery Department of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Super Specialized Hospital today officially commenced indoor patient admission services. Marking this significant development, two 20-year-old players from the Bangladesh National Women’s Football Team successfully underwent Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgeries in their knees.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, each surgery was conducted separately and lasted approximately one hour, as stated in a media release from BMU. The procedures were performed by a six-member medical team led by Associate Professor Dr Sheikh Farhad and Associate Professor Dr Chowdhury Iqbal Mahmud from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Assistant Professor Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman and Dr Md Ali Haider also played significant roles during the surgeries.
Following the successful operations, Dr Sheikh Farhad, who also serves as BMU Proctor and Chairman of the Bangladesh Football Federation Sports Medical Committee, confirmed that both players are in stable condition. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of care provided, noting that the surgeries were completed at a relatively low cost, with the Bangladesh Football Federation covering the medical expenses.
The Orthopedic Surgery Department had been offering outpatient services in two shifts daily. With the launch of patient admission and surgical services, the department is now fully operational. The BMU Super Specialized Hospital also houses several advanced medical centers, including the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease Center, Hepatology and Liver Transplant Center, Cardiovascular and Stroke Center, Mother and Child Health Care Center, Kidney Disease and Urology Center, and Accident and Emergency Center.
