Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain announced today that electric buses will soon be operating on the roads of the capital. “The project will begin from 1st July. The government has taken the initiative to reduce the problem of public transport in the city,” he stated in a post on his verified Facebook page.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the project plans to introduce a total of 400 electric buses, supported by three charging depots. The initiative aims to be completed by 2030. Financially, the World Bank will contribute Taka 2,135 crore, while the government will provide Taka 375 crore to fund this ambitious plan.
Additionally, in another Facebook post, Asif, who also serves as the youth and sports adviser, highlighted the significance of the Farakka Long March, led by Maulana Bhashani. He emphasized that this march is an inspiration for the region’s people in their fight for a fair share of water. The post commemorates the historic Farakka Day on May 16, recalling how millions joined the long march towards Farakka under Maulana Bhashani’s leadership to demand equitable water resources.
