Dhaka: Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated today that the democratic world will not advocate for the Awami League (AL), which he described as brazenly murderous, anti-democratic, and corrupt, following the interim government's ban on the party's activities. "I don't believe the world will lament over banning AL's activities," Alam told BSS in response to a question about the international community's reaction to the ban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam highlighted that the ban was implemented to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of July Movement activists, and safeguard plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal. He emphasized that political parties have been banned in other democracies for crimes against humanity and for actions against national interests. Alam cited the banning of Nazi and fascist parties in Germany and Italy after World War II and similar actions in Spain and Belgium against parties involved in secessionist activities.
Alam further referenced a UNHCHR report, which he claimed provided undeniable evidence of AL and its affiliates' involvement in heinous crimes against humanity. He accused the party of destroying democracy and the electoral process in Bangladesh and alleged that AL's leaders and supporters looted banks and transferred large amounts of funds overseas.
He concluded by expressing confidence that no democratic nation would support such a party, stating, "Therefore, we don't anticipate any adverse international reaction to the ban on AL's activities."
