Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul announced that necessary measures are underway to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the country. "Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be formed and necessary measures are being taken for this purpose," he stated during a meeting on the "Disappearance Prevention and Remedies Ordinance, 2025" (Second Draft) held at the Judicial Administration Training Institute.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Nazrul emphasized the urgent need for the commission, expressing that it would have been beneficial to have such a body since 1972. He revealed plans to frame the commission with the assistance of the Honorable Chief Justice and a delegation, which includes representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as they plan a visit to South Africa.
Dr Nazrul highlighted the need to address those responsible for serious crimes like enforced disappearances, murders, and crimes against humanity, stating that their numbers are not large. He stressed the importance of appropriate punishment and the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Committee to separate these individuals from the rest of the nation.
He further elaborated on the intention to strengthen both the law and the Enforced Disappearance Commission, considering it part of an ongoing reform process frequently mentioned by the Chief Adviser. The meeting involved discussions on improving the legislation as much as possible, reflecting the nation's need to unite and move forward.
Dr Nazrul reaffirmed their commitment to pursue necessary actions to ensure proper legal judgment and maximum punishment for those responsible for these crimes. He also emphasized the creation of laws and a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to prevent future occurrences of such crimes.
The event included virtual participation from writer, online activist, and political analyst Pinaki Bhattacharya, who shared his views on various clauses of the draft law. Other notable participants included Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Education Adviser Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, and Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, among others.
