Dhaka: Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) today marked 'World Lupus Day-2025' to create awareness among the people about Lupus disease. Marking the day, BMU Rheumatology department and Pediatrics department jointly organized a seminar titled 'Make Lupus Visible' at the campus with BMU VC Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, speaking at the event, BMU VC urged the doctors to play an effective role in reducing patients' healthcare expenses. He highlighted that patients in Bangladesh currently bear about 73% of healthcare costs, which far exceeds the government's target of reducing this to 30% by 2030. He pointed out that most expenses come from medication.
To reach this target, Prof. Dr. Alam recommended that doctors follow evidence-based guidelines and prescribe only essential and affordable medicines. He emphasized the importance of avoiding unregistered medicines and mentioned that the Rheumatology department sets an example by adhering to this practice. He praised the department for its international-standard faculty, research contributions, and leadership in developing treatment guidelines.
The vice chancellor also called for the expansion of rheumatology services at the super-specialized hospital to provide increased treatment options for patients. The seminar saw the participation of university officials, faculty members, deans, doctors, residents, and concerned patients.
Earlier in the day, a colorful rally was organized to mark the occasion. Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease that can damage multiple organs, primarily affecting young women. Symptoms include fatigue, rash, joint pain, and immune dysfunction. It is estimated that around 5 million people worldwide suffer from this condition.
