Dhaka: Principal Information Officer (PIO) Md Nizamul Kabir has emphasized the necessity for information officers to enhance their skills in fact checking and preventing rumors. He highlighted this need during a training session on ‘Fact Checking and Preventing Rumors’ held at the Press Information Department (PID) meeting room within the Secretariat.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kabir identified rumors as a significant challenge in today’s society, pointing out that a systematic effort by certain groups is underway to spread misinformation and create societal chaos. He stressed the importance of raising public awareness to safeguard individuals, society, and the state from the detrimental effects of rumors.

Kabir further explained that officials within the PID are actively engaged in identifying rumors and distributing accurate information. The ‘Rumor Prevention and Information Committee’ has been established within the PID to monitor and verify the authenticity of misinformation and rumors circulating in the media and on social platforms.

To combat the spread of rumors, the committee is regularly producing iconotexts and videos. These materials are proving effective in enhancing public awareness and countering misinformation, as stated by the PIO.

The training session was led by digital investigative journalist Kadruddin Shishir, with several information officials participating in the event.
