Dhaka: The government has appointed Commodore M Rashed Sattar from the navy as the new Sergeant at Arms in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS), replacing his predecessor, Commodore Sabbir Ahmed Khan. The official press release announced that Commodore Sabbir Ahmed Khan has been transferred to the Armed Forces Division for subsequent reattachment in the navy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the public administration ministry has stated that the order is to be executed with immediate effect. The role of the Sergeant at Arms is crucial, as it involves maintaining order, security, and protocol within the parliamentary building, particularly during sessions. Additionally, the position includes performing ceremonial duties.
In the Jatiya Sangsad, the responsibility of Sergeant at Arms is typically assigned to a navy commodore, a rank equivalent to an army brigadier general, under a deputation arrangement. This appointment reflects the ongoing practice of entrusting a senior military officer with the role to ensure the seamless operation and security of the parliamentary proceedings.
