Sylhet: Farmers in the haor areas of Sylhet are pressing on with the harvesting of Boro paddy despite challenging weather, having completed 85 percent of the harvest in the region’s four districts.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bimal Chandra Som, the Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Sylhet, reported that paddy harvesting is also in full swing in the highland areas, with 33 percent of the crop harvested so far. Over five lakh workers are engaged daily in paddy harvesting throughout the agricultural region. Despite unfavorable weather, the use of combined harvester machines has allowed farmers to continue their work smoothly.

DAE sources indicate that 1,850 combined harvesters are currently operational in the Sylhet agricultural region. Each machine has the capacity to harvest 7 to 8 hectares of paddy per day. This year, Boro paddy has been cultivated on 276,803 hectares in the haor areas and on 220,416 hectares in the plain lands of the Sylhet division.

The DAE remains hopeful that if the weather remains favorable, the harvest will be completed by May 5.
