Dhaka: The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has extended legal assistance to indigent litigants in 2,78,465 cases at government expense, according to a report published on its website today. The comprehensive report outlines the organization’s efforts from 2009 to February 2025.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the report highlights that the legal aid services initially started at the district level and have since expanded to include the Supreme Court, the Workers’ Legal Aid Cell in Dhaka and Chattogram, and prisons across the country. Out of the total cases where legal aid was rendered, 1,46,121 have been successfully resolved.

The government funds these services under the ‘Legal Aid Services Act,’ aiming to assist financially disadvantaged and incapable litigants nationwide. NLASO operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

In recognition of the government’s initiatives to ensure justice for all, April 28 was declared ‘National Legal Aid Day’ in 2013. This day is celebrated annually with events aimed at promoting the legal aid program.
