Dhaka: Public health experts at a recent discussion emphasized the need for expanding preventive healthcare as a means to improve poverty conditions by preventing the loss of livelihoods. They highlighted that effective and sustainable management is essential to ensure preventive healthcare, with healthcare costs being a significant barrier to reducing poverty.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the discussion was organized by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) focusing on 'What to do to improve sustainable health and nutrition.' The event took place at the PKSF office, as noted in a press release issued today.
The meeting was addressed by several key figures, including PKSF managing director Md Fazlul Kader, Healthcare Reform Commission member Dr Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman, Institute of Health Economics of Dhaka University Professor Dr Syed Abdul Hamid, WaterAid regional director Dr Khairul Islam, and Ad-Din Welfare Centre president Dr Mohammad Abdus Sabur.
In his remarks, Md. Fazlul Kader stated, "PKSF prioritizes poverty alleviation and post-poverty development through sustainable income growth. However, the amount of money people have to spend out of their own pockets for medical expenses is a major reason for their loss of income. To address this challenge, preventive healthcare services must be expanded nationwide."
Dr Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman added, "Healthcare must be integrated into political commitments. Primary healthcare is a fundamental human right, and the government must ensure this right by enacting appropriate laws."
