Dhaka: The 'National Legal Aid Day-2025' will be observed tomorrow, featuring a range of activities at national, district, and local levels. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul is scheduled to inaugurate the day at a function at Osmani Smriti Auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the theme for this year's observance is "Conflict brings no happiness, so embrace compromise, brother. Legal aid is here for you- no need to worry." The National Legal Aid Services Organization has called on relevant bodies to organize rallies and take necessary measures to mark the occasion.
Since its initiation in 2013, April 28 has been designated as "National Legal Aid Day" to provide legal support for individuals facing financial or socio-economic barriers to justice. The day's celebration aims to promote government legal aid initiatives and ensure they are observed with appropriate respect at the local level.
The program for the day includes discussions, seminars, distribution of promotional materials, and awarding the best panel lawyer. These activities will be organized by various committees, including the District Legal Aid Committee and Union Legal Aid Committee.
Human rights organizations, NGOs, members of the police, law students, and upazila administration staff have been invited to participate in the events. The National Legal Aid Services Organization has allocated funds to support these activities.
As of March 2025, 11,95,075 indigent litigants have received legal aid through the National Legal Aid Service Organization. These services are provided via several channels, including the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 64 district offices, and a national helpline.
