Dhaka: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an accused individual on charges of forcibly raping a girl from Pirganj upazila in Rangpur. The arrest took place in the Azimpur area of Dhaka city on Friday.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the detainee has been identified as Md Shimul Mia, 27, son of Md Bablu Mia of Pirganj Thana Para area under Pirganj Police Station in Rangpur district. Acting on a tip-off, a joint operational team of RAB-13's Crime Prevention Specialised Company (CPSC) in Rangpur and RAB-10's CPSC in Lalbag conducted the raid that led to the arrest in Dhaka.
The accused had previously been proposing love to the victim, who is from the same area. Upon her refusal, he threatened the victim and her family with harm. On April 4, 2025, at 10.30 am, the accused allegedly lured the victim from Gourishwerpur Bazar under Pirganj Police Station and forcibly raped her by promising marriage.
A rape case was subsequently filed by the victim at Pirganj Police Station on April 5, 2025. The incident gained significant attention in the area and was taken up by the CPSC of RAB-13 and the CPSC of RAB-10.
After enhancing intelligence activities, the elite force confirmed the accused's location and arrested him from the Azimpur area of Dhaka city at 10.30 am on Friday. The accused has been handed over to the Pirganj Police Station for further legal action, as stated in the press release.
