Dhaka: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized that education transcends mere degree acquisition, advocating for a strong commitment to truth, justice, and environmental protection. Rizwana articulated that education should not solely be a means to earn a living but should empower graduates to transform society, build the nation, and support marginalized communities.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana called on students to share the vision of building a new Bangladesh with a focus on justice and national interest. She highlighted the importance of protecting wetlands and forests from encroachment and advocated for standing courageously against plastic pollution, noise pollution, deforestation, and the climate crisis. Rizwana delivered these remarks during her convocation speech at the 3rd convocation ceremony of Central Women’s University held at the Officers’ Club.

She further stated that the struggles for women’s rights and environmental protection are interconnected, noting that women are disproportionately affected by climate disasters despite being less responsible for them. Rizwana emphasized that the climate movement is inherently a feminist struggle.

Addressing the graduates, Rizwana remarked, “You are the leaders of tomorrow. Every decision you make will shape the future of this planet.” She underscored the importance of sustainable development, advocating for progress that does not come at the expense of nature’s destruction. Rizwana encouraged students to take responsibility for positive social change beyond their careers and to pursue eco-friendly innovations in science, technology, and research.

The convocation was also addressed by Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Adviser for Education, and Sharmeen S Murshid, Adviser for Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare. The ceremony, presided over by the university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Parveen Hasan, was attended by the Chairman and members of the university’s board of trustees, faculty members, students, guardians, and distinguished guests.
