Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced that the government would implement stringent measures to address extortion and terrorist activities in the hilly regions. He emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling these issues during a briefing with journalists after inspecting various Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camps and assessing the law and order situation in Sajek, a prominent tourist destination.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser highlighted the need to curb illegal arms trading, which he identified as the primary cause of terrorism and extortion in these areas. He stated that resolving the issue of illegal arms trading is essential to solving the violence in the hills. Jahangir further mentioned that recovering arms looted after the August 5 changeover would be a significant step toward resolving these problems.

The Home Adviser also noted the increase in BGB camps in the hilly areas to prevent illegal arms smuggling across borders and ensure the security of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). He criticized the Indian media for spreading misinformation about Bangladesh, urging journalists to stay vigilant against rumors and contribute positively to national welfare.

Jahangir stressed the importance of designing development schemes aimed at benefiting the common people in remote hilly areas. The briefing was attended by CHT Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General (DG) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, among others.
