Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam has stated that the independence of the press holds no value without its accountability to the people. He made this assertion during an Iftar-mahfil organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at Tathya Bhaban in the capital today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was attended by Information Secretary Mahbuba Farjana, along with heads of various departments and organizations under the ministry and leaders of media organizations. During his speech, Mahfuj Alam criticized the media's role over the past 16 years, highlighting that journalist organizations maintained close ties with business syndicates and political groups, which he described as unfortunate for the nation.
Mahfuj Alam emphasized the need to establish discipline within the media sector through discussions with relevant stakeholders, following the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission. He also mentioned the government's intention to initiate necessary steps to enhance the salaries and benefits of media workers to a more reasonable level.
Furthermore, Mahfuj Alam stressed the importance of liberating journalists from the influence of media owners and editors to ensure true independence of mass media. He called upon all concerned parties, including media owners and journalists, to cooperate in implementing the necessary reforms in the mass media sector.
