Dhaka: European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller today paid a courtesy call on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan. The meeting was attended by BNP Standing Committee member and Chairperson’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, along with Organizing Secretary and Chairperson’s Special Assistant on Foreign Policy Advisory Committee Shama Obaid.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amir Khasru informed reporters that the BNP plans to present reform proposals to the interim government this coming Sunday. The meeting covered extensive discussions on a range of political, economic, and foreign issues. Efforts by the Reform Commission to build consensus among political parties were also on the agenda, although some disagreements remain. Khasru emphasized the importance of unity among those who believe in democracy, stating, “We will move forward with the reforms where there is consensus.”
Khasru elaborated on the approach to addressing issues lacking consensus, noting that each party would present their positions to the public during the elections. These issues could be constitutional, election-centric, or otherwise. He mentioned that after being elected, parties would bring these issues to parliament for discussion and debate. The senior BNP leader also highlighted the importance of holding elections by December, asserting that any further delay would be unacceptable. He stated, “Everyone believes that if elections are held by December, we will be on the right track.”
The BNP representative underscored the critical need to restore democracy and the people’s ownership of the country, which the party has strived to achieve over the past 17 years. He concluded by affirming that elections are the sole pathway to achieving these democratic objectives.
