Patuakhali: Convener of National Citizen Party (NCP) Nahid Islam today demanded immediate arrest of the remaining accused of Dumki college student rape case within 24 hours. “We came to know that the names of two accused of the rape and one has already been arrested,” he said this while exchanging views with media on abduction and gang rape of the college student at Patuakhali Medical College hall room here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid Islam emphasized the urgency of capturing the offenders not only in the Dumki incident but also in other rape cases. He urged the government to amend existing laws swiftly, as they have already decided. NCP Central Member Dr. Tasnim Zara expressed her concern over the freedom with which criminals move in society after committing crimes, forcing victims to seek justice tirelessly. She insisted on the need for change and the identification and trial of offenders.
Dr. Tasnim Zara also highlighted the importance of moving away from a culture of impunity and ensuring justice for the Dumki rape victim as her fundamental right. The victim reportedly expressed her desire for justice not just as a girl, but as a general citizen of the country. NCP Joint Convener and Assistant Attorney General Mujahidul Islam Shaheen assured that his organization would provide comprehensive support and legal assistance to ensure fair justice for the victim.
The meeting was attended by other NCP members, including Abdul Hannan Masud and Dr. Tasnim Zara. Simultaneously, a central team of BNP, instructed by its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and led by Hassan Mamun, visited the victim at the hospital at around 3:00 pm.
The victim, a 12th grader of Government Janata College and daughter of Jasim Hawlader, a martyr of the July-August uprising, was reportedly gang-raped in a jungle of Algi village under Pangashia union of Dumki upazila on March 18. A case was filed against three individuals: Sakib Munshi, 19, Sifat Munshi, 20, and Imran Munshi, 19. Police have arrested Sakib Munshi and are conducting a medical examination of the victim, who is receiving treatment at the ‘one stop crisis centre’ in Patuakhali Government Medical College Hospital. Efforts to apprehend the other suspects are ongoing.
