Dhaka: Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman stated that the High Court’s judgment in the case concerning the brutal killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad has underscored the necessity of instilling discipline within the state and society, while also ensuring justice.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Attorney General emphasized that the verdict delivers a strong message to society, asserting that regardless of one’s power or backing, truth and the rule of law will eventually prevail. He made these remarks during a press conference following the pronouncement of the judgment by the High Court division bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain.

In his address, the Attorney General referenced an ancient Chinese saying, highlighting that the significance of Abrar’s death was profound, likening it to being “weightier than Mount Tai” as it challenged the foundational values of the nation. He further noted that Abrar’s death serves as a testament to the fact that even strong fascism can be overcome when humanity is awakened among the populace.

Meanwhile, Abrar’s father, Barkat Ullah, expressed his satisfaction with the judgment and called for its swift execution once all legal procedures are finalized. He expressed a desire to prevent other fathers from experiencing the same loss and advocated for the eradication of ragging to ensure students’ safety in dormitories.

Additionally, the grieving father extended his gratitude to the government for posthumously nominating Abrar for the Swadhinata Padak, the highest civilian honor in the country.

The High Court upheld a lower court’s judgment, which convicted and sentenced 20 individuals to death and five others to life imprisonment in connection with Abrar Fahad’s murder. The verdict was delivered by a High Court division bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain after reviewing the convicts’ death references and jail appeals.
