Kurigram: Steps have been taken to launch a 24/7 hour institutional delivery service in eight remote Union Health and Family Welfare Centers (UHFWCs) across five upazilas in Kurigram. This initiative aims to improve reproductive healthcare and reduce maternal and child mortality in the region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Divisional Director of the Department of Family Planning for Rangpur division, Dewan Morshed Kamal, shared this development during his visit to several UHFWCs, including Naodanga Union Health and Family Welfare Center of Fulbari upazila, and Ramkhana and Noonkhawa Union Health and Family Welfare Centers of Nageshwari upazila in Kurigram. These steps, supported by the Canadian government and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Bangladesh, focus on enhancing the quality of reproductive health services, including round-the-clock institutional normal delivery services.
LAMB, a foreign donor-run hospital, is spearheading the implementation of these activities under the Sexual Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child-Adolescent Health (SRMNCAH) project. Dewan Morshed Kamal emphasized the significance of providing care to pregnant women, mothers, and children in the remote riverine char areas of Kurigram. The services include counseling for adolescents and family planning services by skilled midwives.
Kamal further noted that these efforts will increase public awareness about the importance of institutional deliveries and strengthen the referral system. This will facilitate the identification and timely treatment of patients with conditions such as via and fistula.
Accompanying Dewan Morshed Kamal on his visits were Deputy Director of the Family Planning Department of Kurigram Md. Modabber Hossain, Assistant Director Dr. Md. Manzur Hossain, LAMB Operations Director Swapan Pahan, and Director of Community Health and Development Programme Utpal Minj. Dewan Morshed Kamal is scheduled to visit Narayanpur union of Nageshwari upazila and Char Saheber Alga union of Ulipur upazila in Kurigram tomorrow, alongside LAMB Project Manager Mahtab Liton and other concerned officials.
