Rangpur: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today ordered four individuals, including two former police officers, to be produced in court on April 9 in connection with a crimes against humanity case related to the killing of Abu Sayed during the July-August mass uprising in Rangpur.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, issued the order following a request from the prosecution. ICT Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam announced the decision during a press briefing after the hearing.

The individuals ordered to appear are former sub-inspector Amir Hossain, former constable Sujan Chandra Roy, former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, and Imran Chowdhury Akash, the general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) university wing.

"Before the killing of Abu Sayed, then proctor Shariful and leaders and activists of BCL attacked the varsity students and forced them out of the campus. At one point, two policemen shot and killed Abu Sayed at close range. We have evidence indicating Shariful's direct involvement in the killing. All four have been arrested and are currently in custody. The tribunal has ordered their production on April 9," Muhammad Tajul Islam explained.

The ICT chief prosecutor also mentioned that the tribunal's investigation agency is expected to submit its probe report on the crimes against humanity case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina within this month.

The family of Abu Sayed filed a complaint on January 13 against 25 individuals in relation to his death.
