Dhaka: The High Court (HC) has concluded its hearing on the death references and jail appeals concerning the convicts in the murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad. The court is now poised to deliver its judgment at any moment.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a High Court Division bench comprising Justice A. K. M. Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain reserved the judgment as the legal arguments were concluded. The case is now under CAV (court awaits verdict), signifying that the decision will be announced soon.
Representing the state in the hearings were Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, as well as deputy attorney generals Md Jasim Sarker, Khandaker Bahar Rumi, Nur Mohammad Azmi, Russel Khandaker, and assistant attorney generals Abdul Jabbar Jewel, Laboni Akter, Tenvir Prodhan, and Sumaiya Binte Aziz. On the defense side, senior advocate SM Shahjahan, Azizur Rahman Dulu, Masud Hasan Chowdhury, and Mohammad Shishir Manir presented arguments.
The tragic incident occurred on October 7, 2019, when Abrar was beaten to death by some members of the then BUET unit Chhatra League over his Facebook posts. Subsequently, Abrar’s father lodged a case with Chawkbazar Thana against 19 BUET students. Following an investigation, police added six more names to the list of accused individuals.
On December 8, 2021, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 found 20 people guilty, sentencing them to death, while five others received life imprisonment for their roles in the murder.
