Awami Ulema League General Secretary Arrested in Ulipur for Alleged Assault

Ulipur: Police have arrested the General Secretary of Upazila Awami Ulema League and Principal of Ulipur Bahumukhi Alim Madrasa, Maulana Shafiqur Rahman, for his alleged involvement in assaulting students during the anti-discrimination movement in Ulipur, Kurigram. Rahman is the son of the late Abdus Sattar of Nefra area in Gunaigach union of Ulipur and was apprehended from the upazila gate this afternoon, according to police sources.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the incident took place on July 18, when students participating in the quota reform movement were attacked and beaten in the areas of Ulipur Maharani Swarnamoyi School and College, as well as Masjidul Huda. Following the incident, student Mosabbir Hossain filed a case on November 21, 2024, accusing 44 individuals, along with 180 unidentified persons.



Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zillur Rahman of Ulipur Police Station confirmed that the arrest was made in relation to the assault on students during the anti-discrimination protests. The accused has been sent to jail after being produced before the court.
