Pabna: Police today arrested the president of Sujanagar Upazila Awami League, Abdul Wahab, who had previously been forcibly freed from their custody during an attack on a police van in the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a police team, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at Gajnar Beel in the Mathurapur area under Bhaina union of the upazila. The operation led to the arrest of Awami League leader Abdul Wahab and two of his associates from a house around 7 am, as confirmed by Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Sujanagar Police Station.
Earlier, authorities had already detained 11 others in connection with the assault on the police vehicle. Wahab, who is also a former chairman of Sujanagar Upazila Parishad and ex-mayor of Sujanagar Municipality, had been evading capture in a case related to an attack on students during a student-led mass uprising.
On February 2, law enforcement officials initially apprehended Wahab near Mathurapur High School in Sujanagar municipality. However, shortly after his arrest, Awami League supporters attacked the police vehicle, chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, and succeeded in freeing Wahab from police custody.
