Dhaka: Police arrested six persons in connection with the attack on the officials of Department of Environment (DoE) during a drive in a banned polythene factory in Chawkbazar.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrestees were identified as Md Humayun Kabir, 28, Md Ariful Islam, 40, Anwar Hossain Khokan, 48, Md Shahabuddin, 45, Md Nazmul Alam Uzzal, 36, and Md Sumon, 26, as stated in a media release by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) and Chawkbazar police conducted separate operations to arrest the individuals involved. These operations took place over today and Monday.
The incident traces back to January 26 when the DoE executed a mobile court operation targeting banned polythene factories in Chawkbazar. During this operation, a significant amount of polythene was confiscated.
While officials were transporting the seized polythene bags in a pickup truck, a group of 150-200 people attacked them using sticks, bricks, iron rods, and other objects, seriously injuring a DoE official.
The attackers also forcibly took the banned polythene bags and damaged the pickup truck. Following the attack, DoE Inspector Md. Motaher Hossain filed a case with the Chawkbazar Model police station against six named individuals and 150-200 unknown persons.
