Dhaka: A special court here today convicted and sentenced one Anik, an expatriate, to life imprisonment in a case lodged over his attempt to smuggle 15,050 yaba tablets to Saudi Arabia in 2023. Judge Arunava Chakrabarti of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant. It also fined him Taka five lakh, or he would have to suffer two more years behind bars in default.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case documents revealed that Anik was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on January 16, 2023, before he could board a plane for Dammam, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Security officials seized 15,050 yaba tablets from his bag.
The next day, Inspector Azadul Islam Salam of the Department of Narcotics Control filed the case with the Airport Police Station.
