Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today announced that the Detective Branch (DB) of police has been instructed not to arrest anyone while in civilian attire. He emphasized that there will be no unauthorized activities such as Aynaghar or Bhater Hotel within the force. "DB personnel must wear their jackets and display their identity cards during arrests. They can't operate outside the legal framework," he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the home adviser addressed journalists following a visit to the DB office at Mintoo Road. He reiterated the absence of any Aynaghar [torture cell] or Bhater Hotel [eatery] within the DB, urging journalists to report any unlawful actions. "If I do anything wrong, journalists must write on it," he added. Jahangir highlighted the transparent recruitment process for sub-inspectors and constables in the police force.
In response to questions regarding demonstrations by sacked sub-inspectors, Jahangir clarified that their dismissal was due to a breach of discipline at the police training academy. By protesting on the streets instead of formally appealing to the Inspector General of Police, they demonstrated a lack of discipline. He affirmed that their reinstatement was not possible due to their disciplinary violations.
Addressing the situation at the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, Jahangir assured that peace is being maintained effectively. "Our border is completely in our control," he declared. Regarding abductions in Teknaf, he confirmed the rescue of all kidnapped victims and noted ongoing efforts to combat drug trading in the area, despite the detention of notorious smuggler Bodi.
On the issue of the torture of 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals in Libya, Jahangir stated, "If any victim comes to us with an allegation, we will take legal action against the culprits." Furthermore, he mentioned a meeting held with the DB to discuss improvements in the country's law and order situation, acknowledging progress while recognizing the need for further advancements.
Jahangir also addressed the rise in street crimes, noting that numerous muggers have been apprehended in the past week.
