JAMALPUR: A court in Jamalpur has sentenced Uzzal Mahmud to death for the murder of his wife, Tahmina, in the Sadar upazila earlier this year. In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of Taka 50,000 on Mahmud, who hails from Deuliyabari village.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the prosecution revealed that Uzzal Mahmud had been subjecting his wife to abuse over dowry issues. Just two months into their marriage, Mahmud tortured and killed Tahmina on April 18. The victim's father, Md Ibrahim Khalil, subsequently filed a murder case at the Jamalpur Sadar police station.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Muhammad Rafiqul Islam of the Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1. The judge based his decision on the testimonies of 15 witnesses and a thorough examination of all relevant documents. While Mahmud was found guilty and sentenced to death, the court acquitted 12 other accused individuals due to a lack of evidence supporting the charges against them.
The case has drawn significant attention to the issue of domestic violence and dowry-related abuse, highlighting ongoing societal challenges in addressing these matters effectively.
