Habiganj: BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain today expressed hopes that the newly formed Election Commission (EC) would swiftly create a conducive environment for the upcoming general elections. Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at the council of Habiganj Sadar Upazila of BNP, he emphasized the importance of facilitating the people's right to vote. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Zahid criticized the previous elections held under the Awami League regime, labeling them as farcical and a deprivation of the people's voting rights. He underscored the need for the new EC to demonstrate its strength and intentions through its activities, which will ultimately shape the future and the people's perception of the commission. He expressed hope that the commission would learn from past mistakes and align itself with the public. The BNP leader urged the commission to prioritize the creation of an accurate voter list, assuring that the BNP would extend full support to the EC in cond ucting free, fair, and neutral elections. Dr. Zahid reiterated the BNP's commitment to democracy, which he said is reflected in the party's formation of committees through councils. The event also featured speeches from BNP's central organizing secretary GK Gous, Habiganj BNP's joint convenors Advocate Nurul Islam, Islam Tarafder Tanu, and Hazi Md Enamul Haque, as well as valiant freedom fighter and Habiganj BNP leader Golam Mostofa Rafique, Habiganj district Juba Dal president Jalal Ahmed, and general secretary Safiqur Rahman Situ. The council sees ten candidates competing for five key positions, including president and general secretary, with a voter base of 568 members.
