Dhaka: The newly appointed chief election commissioner (CEC) and four other election commissioners (ECs) are scheduled to take their oaths tomorrow. The ceremony will be held at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge at 1.30 pm, as confirmed by M Shafiqul Islam, the public relations officer of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed is set to administer the oath. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed former secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the new CEC and four others as election commissioners on November 21, under section 118 (1) of the constitution. The newly appointed election commissioners include former secretary M Anwarul Islam Sarker, retired district and sessions Judge Abdur Rahman Masud, retired joint secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad, and Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Sanaullah. The Cabinet Division issued separate gazette notifications on Thursday to formalize these appointments. The new election commission has been constitu ted based on recommendations from a six-member search committee. This committee was led by Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, formed on October 29 in compliance with Clause-3 of "The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022". The search committee was tasked with recommending qualified candidates for the roles of the CEC and other commissioners.
