DHAKA: Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus today announced that his interim government is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the security of all citizens, including religious minorities. In a televised address marking 100 days of the interim government, Prof Yunus emphasized the administration’s dedication to preventing any violence against citizens, specifically mentioning that efforts extend beyond just the Hindu community.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus highlighted ongoing investigations into incidents where religious minorities experienced violence. He described the state of insecurity in Bangladesh when the interim government took office, noting threats from fascist forces predicting massive casualties should they lose power.
Prof Yunus addressed the temporary paralysis of the police administration, which lasted a week, yet affirmed that large-scale violence was averted. He pointed out attempts to instill fear among religious minorities and clarified that while there w
ere incidents of violence, they were politically motivated and exaggerated in public discourse.
The Chief Adviser criticized attempts to destabilize the nation by attributing religious motives to these events but praised the government’s firm response with public cooperation. He noted that two months into their governance, the Durga Puja was peacefully celebrated at approximately 32,000 venues nationwide.
Highlighting government initiatives, Prof Yunus mentioned an executive order granting an additional holiday for Durga Puja, enhancing the festivities. He reiterated comprehensive security measures were in place to ensure a smooth celebration for the Hindu community.
