Dhaka: A court here today sent Swechchhasebak League central leader Sheikh Jamal to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah passed the order as police produced Sheikh Jamal, also the former organizing secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity, before the court after the end of his two-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the completion of the probe.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jiadur Rahman had earlier placed Sheikh Jamal on a two-day remand on October 30 in connection with the case. Sheikh Jamal was arrested from his Moghbazar residence in the early hours of October 24. He was initially produced before the court where police requested a seven-day remand in the case concerning Shamim’s murder.
The court had previously set October 30 to hold a hearing on the bail plea. Case documents reveal that the BNP had called a rally in the capita
l’s Naya Paltan area on October 28, 2023. In response, the ruling Awami League convened a counter rally on the same day in the capital. Awami League members, supported by law enforcement agencies, allegedly attacked the BNP rally, resulting in the death of Shamim Mollah and injuries to many leaders and activists.
The case was filed against 704 individuals, including AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, on September 24, 2024.
