Dhaka: Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam today laid emphasis on introducing strong early warning systems, improved building codes, and making better urban planning to save lives from disaster. ‘Due to the geographical location, Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-risk countries in the world. Due to lack of awareness and knowledge, Bangladesh has to constantly face man-made disasters,’ he said.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled “Urban Disaster Management: Problems and Remedies”, organized by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief at Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM) Foundation Multipurpose Hall in the city, said a press release.

Azam emphasized that risk reduction is possible only if people become aware, although he acknowledged the difficulty in achieving widespread awareness. He suggested that the creation of awareness should begin at home and stressed the im
portance of volunteer involvement across various communities, rather than solely relying on government efforts.

Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Kamrul Islam, among others, also participated in the workshop.
