HABIGANJ: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) district unit has taken legal action by filing a case against 54 police officials, including former Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Murad Ali and Sadar Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Masuk Ali. The allegations involve indiscriminate firing and torture against BNP activists.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shamsul Islam Matin, the General Secretary of Lakhai Upazila unit of BNP, initiated the case proceedings at the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court. The court, after hearing part of the case, has scheduled November 5 for further proceedings.
The complaint presented in court detailed that the accused officers, under the leadership of the then SP, obstructed access to a public meeting organized by the district BNP at its Shayesthaganj unit office on December 22, 2021. This meeting was attended by BNP’s central leaders as well.
The situation escalated when police personnel reportedly fired on BNP activists without warning and subjected them to
severe physical abuse. The incident resulted in over 300 BNP activists and members of its affiliated organizations, including district Chhatra Dal unit President Ringon, sustaining gunshot injuries.
