Dhaka: BNP leader Dr. Shahadat Hossain, recently declared mayor-elect of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) by an election tribunal, is set to take his oath as mayor in Dhaka tomorrow. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the conference room of the Local Government Division at the Secretariat in Dhaka, with AF Hassan Ariff, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, officiating the event at 11 am.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Maruful Haque Chowdhury, personal secretary to Dr. Shahadat, confirmed the event and stated that senior government officials and key leaders from the BNP, including many activists from Chattogram, are expected to be present at the ceremony. Following the oath, Dr. Shahadat plans to visit the mazar of BNP founder and former Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman to pay his respects. He is scheduled to return to Chattogram on November 5 to formally assume his duties as mayor.

The election tribunal in Chattogram had earlier declared Dr. Shahadat Hossain as the mayor-elect of CCC, following a case he filed seeking the cancellation of the 2021 election results. The tribunal’s judge, joint district and sessions judge Mohammad Khairul Amin, delivered the verdict on October 1, affirming Dr. Shahadat’s status as mayor-elect. Dr. Shahadat, who was the BNP’s nominated mayoral candidate for the CCC election, had lodged the case on February 24, 2021, citing widespread electoral fraud and incidents of vote rigging.
