Utilization of BRI project essential: NA Chair Dahal

Chairperson of the National Assembly, Narayan Prasad Dahal, has said the Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) launched by China could be utilized for the utmost welfare of Nepal and its people.

During a programme organized in the federal capital on Wednesday, he viewed the BRI could be linked to the future of Nepal and Nepalis. The programme was on ‘BRI Opportunities and Challenges’.

“BRI has given priority to infrastructure development, connectivity and economic assistance,” he reminded, adding that enforcement of the project in Nepal could further reinforce Nepal-China relations.

He further viewed both countries could reap benefits from it. Nepal can receive investment in road, rail, energy and communication infrastructure through the BRI.

On the occasion, UML Vice Chair Guru Baral said proper planning and selection of projects could be mulled for the BRI so that Nepal creates jobs, promotes innovation and reduces trade loss.

CPN Maoist Centre’s General Secretary Dev Prasad Gurung reminded that although th
e previous government had forwarded plan to enforce the agreement under BRI, it failed due to non-cooperation from then ruling partner.

However, CPN (US) Vice Chair Jagannath Khatiwada said Nepal should be clear on the modality of assistance- through loan or grant- under the project.
