Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Tapan Kanti Ghosh today said that for the vigilance of law-enforcing agencies, there is no scope for smuggling rawhides out of the country.

“Law-enforcing agencies, including the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the district administration are on high alert. All kinds of measures have been taken by the government to ensure that rawhides are not smuggled in any way,” he said while visiting some markets of rawhides in Faridpur, said a press release here.

Currently, he said, Bangladesh can export tanned skins only to China as the country has not been able to obtain the much-required certification from the Leather Working Group (LWG).

“Once the LWG certification is obtained, local skins and hide exporters will get better prices from international retailers and brands,” said the senior secretary.

Ghosh suggested the deputy commissioner (DC) in Faridpur to build a warehouse to preserve rawhides collected from the nearby areas.
