Dhaka: The 91st meeting of the committee responsible for leasing government-owned jalmohals (water bodies) convened today at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Chaired by Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu, the session underscored the significance of managing these public resources for the benefit of the people. State Minister for Land Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin and Senior Secretary A S M Saleh Ahmed were also present, highlighting the importance of the discussions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu emphasized that jalmohals are public assets and stressed the government’s commitment to protecting public interests through humane and sustainable management practices. He reiterated the principle of “Jal jar, jola tar” (water belongs to those who depend on it) from the government’s election manifesto, advocating for measures that balance public welfare, environmental conservation, and support for the livelihoods of impoverished communities.
The meeting addressed the need to align lease prices with realistic expectations while ensuring government revenue. State Minister Mir Helal Uddin instructed officials to collaborate with local Members of Parliament (MPs) to make lease prices consistent with existing laws and policies. This approach aims to maximize government revenue while maintaining fairness in the leasing process.
During the meeting, approvals were granted for leasing nine out of 12 proposed jalmohals in Kishoreganj district, six of 12 in Khulna, 20 of 30 in Habiganj, and 43 of 54 in Sunamganj. The authorities were tasked with further reviewing the remaining proposals, with plans to present them at future committee meetings. Additionally, fresh lease notices were ordered in cases where proposed lease prices were deemed inappropriate.
Furthermore, a proposal to lease 23 jalmohals in Pabna district was approved, reflecting the committee’s ongoing efforts to manage these resources effectively. Officials from the land ministry and related departments participated in the meeting, with Deputy Commissioners from the respective districts joining virtually.
