Dhaka: The government has successfully received nine cargos of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), totaling approximately 2.88 crore MMBTu, in October to address the escalating energy demand across the nation, an official announced today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, General Manager (LNG) of Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), Engineer Md Shah Alam, stated that the country is importing LNG consistently under long-term and short-term agreements as well as from spot markets to fulfill the rising energy demand. He further detailed that the government had received 10 cargos of LNG, amounting to 3.20 crore MMBTu in September and 11 cargos totaling around 3.65 crore MMBTu in August, to secure the nation’s energy supply.
Alam specified that, on average, each cargo contained approximately 32 lakh MMBTu of LNG. Of the cargos received in October, QatarEnergy supplied two cargos, each with about 32 lakh MMBTu. Additionally, Oman’s OQ Trading (OQT) provided two cargos under long-term contracts and another one under a short-term deal.
Furthermore, to ensure an uninterrupted energy supply, the government procured four cargos of LNG from the spot market. Director of Petrobangla, AKM Mizanur Rahman, confirmed this to BSS.
According to the Purchase Committee, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) had earlier approved separate proposals for importing LNG to meet the nation’s gas demand. The purchase committee typically endorses LNG procurement to meet gas needs during its regular weekly meetings.
