The authorities of Begum Rokeya University,

Rangpur (BRUR) have temporarily suspended two teachers and seven officials-

employees who were involved in the murder of Abu Sayeed during the anti-

discrimination movement.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the English Department of English, was

shot dead by the police in front of the university during the anti-

discrimination student movement on July 16 last.

The BRUR authorities have also banned all forms of party-based politics in

the campus.

“The decisions were taken at the 108th Syndicate meeting of the university

held at the administrative building of the university today,” Vice-chancellor

Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali told reporters at a press conference this

afternoon.

Syndicate members- Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Shahidul Islam,

Jagannath University Professor Dr Md Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Chittagong

University Professor Dr Md Siraj Ud Dowllah and Begum Rokeya University

Professor Dr Md Matiur Rahman were present in the syndicate m
eeting.

Earlier, the university administration formed a three-member fact-finding

committee to identify the teachers, students, officers and employees working

in the university involved in the murder of Abu Sayeed and to determine the

type of their punishment.

The fact-finding committee submitted the report recently and the syndicate

meeting took the decisions after discussing the report findings today.

The Vice-chancellor said, “According to the decision of the syndicate, a case

will be filed against all the teachers, officials and employees and 72

students who were involved in the killing of Abu Sayeed.”

In order to monitor and control the moral, academic discipline of the

students, malpractice like extortion, tendering, trading of seats in

residential halls and encroachment of halls will be prohibited in the campus.

The university will be run according to law. Accordingly, in this university,

teachers, officials, employees and students will stop the party-based

politics.

He said, “Teachers,
officials, employees cannot be members of any political

organization. If anyone is still involved, action will be taken against him

in the light of the university’s law.”

All the students involved in Abu Sayeed’s murder have left their studies.

Cases against them and those who have studentships will be subject to

investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.

He said, “Precaution will also be taken so that no one is victimized.”

Hopefully, we will get justice through the court.”

The Vice-chancellor said that the students’ council will be started in the

university soon. There will be student councils even in the three residential

halls too. A committee has been formed in this regard.

It has been decided not to grant leave to all the teachers, officers and

employees who are absent from work without leave. They will be show-caused

for being absent from work including temporary suspension.

A three-member inquiry committee has been constituted in view of the

complaints regarding the appointment of thr
ee teachers.

“Another investigation committee of three members has been constituted to

investigate the complaint of irregularities in the sale of buses by transport

pool,” the Vice-chancellor said.

Meanwhile, general students of university were very happy and distributed

sweets as party politics was banned in the campus.

Supreme sacrifice of Abu Sayeed on July 16 instantly transformed the nation-

wide anti-discrimination student-people movement into an unstoppable popular

uprising that eventually ousted then-fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on

5 August.
