Accra:The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has intensified its market monitoring efforts across the country to ensure the normal supply of LPG cylinders, edible oil, and other essential commodities, while preventing overpricing and hoarding.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a total of 87 businesses were fined Tk 771,500 for various irregularities during drives conducted in 31 districts, including in the city, today. The directorate carried out these operations through 46 monitoring teams focusing on wholesale and retail markets. The emphasis was on ensuring gas cylinder and edible oil supplies, compliance with government prices, and preventing artificial shortages.

During the inspections, officials checked whether businesses displayed updated price lists, charged prices above the prescribed rates, manipulated weights and measures, sold expired products and medicines, or produced counterfeit and adulterated goods. Businesses were instructed to display accurate price lists prominently, sell products at prescribed prices, and preserve purchase and sales receipts.

Warnings were issued against illegal hoarding, creating artificial shortages, and overcharging consumers. In addition to market monitoring, teams distributed leaflets and publicity materials to raise awareness among consumers and traders. The operations were supported by representatives from law enforcement agencies, health inspectors, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and related business organizations.

The directorate advised consumers to avoid purchasing more than necessary, emphasizing that responsible buying helps maintain market stability. Consumers were urged to check price lists, maximum retail prices, production, and expiry dates before purchases and to collect receipts.

Consumers experiencing overpricing or fraud were encouraged to report issues through the directorate's hotline at 16121. The DNCRP stated that regular monitoring and enforcement drives would continue nationwide to ensure the availability of essential goods, fair pricing, and consumer protection.
