Muladi: The local administration has seized 800 litres of diesel and one ton of government rice from a union parishad (UP) member’s residence and his brother’s cattle farm in Muladi upazila of Barishal district. The seizure was made around 4:00 pm on Saturday at the house of ward no-1 member Md. Suman Gharami in South Gachhua village under Char Kalekhan Union.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation was conducted by the upazila administration and Muladi Police Station following intelligence information. Officials stated that information had been received by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s office indicating that Suman Gharami and his brother were illegally stockpiling diesel. Acting on a tip-off, a mobile court led by the Assistant Commissioner (Land), along with police personnel, carried out the raid.
During the operation, 200 litres of diesel and one ton of government rice were recovered from in front of Suman Gharami’s house. An additional 600 litres of diesel were found at Bacchu Alam’s cattle farm. The seized diesel and rice were later taken into custody by the mobile court. Char Kalekhan Union Chairman Md. Mirajul Islam Sardar noted the unusual nature of a UP member possessing government rice and questioned the origins of the stock.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Parag Saha reported that both brothers confessed to the mobile court about storing diesel illegally, leading to Bacchu Alam being fined TK 5,000. Suman Gharami claimed to have purchased the government rice and was asked to produce supporting documents. Legal action will follow if he fails to do so. The seized diesel will be sold at fair market price. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Golam Sarwar added that further action will be taken based on document verification.
